Nigel was born in 1947 and grew up in Frome, Somerset. As a boy chorister in the Anglican Church he was confirmed at St John the Baptist Church. He left school at sixteen and trained as a printer in letterpress printing and bookbinding. At twenty one he felt called to work as a lay missionary printer in Nigeria managing a Diocesan printing press for a Roman Catholic Order during the Biafran Civil War. On return to the UK in 1970 he converted to Roman Catholicism and entered a religious community as an Augustinian friar studying for the priesthood. He subsequently left the religious life and trained as a teacher in Theology and Music teaching up to A level. After teaching for a few years he left and trained as a Jungian Psychotherapist and Supervisor and was in private practice for thirty-
